When a red light stops me on a cold, rainy October night...
October Red Light
Red lights glare on pavement
Wet with heaven’s tears.
Above is a billowy sheet of gray,
Of sorrow, gloom, and fear.
The wipers moan on chilly glass
While thunder omens the end at last.
But inside is a blanket of warmth,
Of engine hum heedless
Of the thunder in the north.
Droplets on my window diffuse shape and light
Shining in the dark of this cold October night.
Engines hum while tires eat
Inches of the dampened street.
Then glowering red turns to neon green,
So I take a sip of warm caffeine,
And continue my journey home.
