There are few things that scare us more than being alone.
Life has often made me feel this way. There have been times when it felt as though no one cared about what I was going through, when my heart was broken and my world had come crashing down. There have been times when I felt—truly and forever—alone.
But our feelings do not always align with the truth, and the truth is that I'm not, and neither are you. We have a friend who has promised to never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). This is the truth that we must hold onto when we are swallowed up in the void of our fear, and we must never let go.
This poem was originally written to secure for me the title of award-losing poetry author (to borrow a cue from S. D. Smith), which it did, in case you all were wondering. The title was borrowed from and inspired by the Owl City song of the same name, which I absolutely love. Seriously, go listen to it. (If you're not an Owl City fan, by the way, you totally ought to be. Just ask my friend Ryan. She agrees with me, therefore, I'm right.)
This is my poem. I hope you like it.
All is darkness about me,
There is no light.
It disappeared beyond the edge of hope
Abandoning me to the night.
My eyes are closed as I try to see
A vision of a happier tomorrow
But all I see is darkness—
Only fear, pain, and sorrow.
I open my eyes as the tears come
And I give in to despair.
How can there be One Who loves me?
Is He really there?
When the darkness utterly engulfs me
Does He really care?
I look up at the black sky above
And through the windows of my tears
I see the stars twinkling like beacons of love
Bidding me not to fear.
A gentle breeze washes over me,
Swaying the trees and grass—
A still, small voice whispering soothingly,
Telling me that darkness will pass.
It tells me of what He did for me
How He suffered for my sins
Upon a wretched tree.
How He knows the answers
To my every when and why,
And how He knows the plans He has for me
And saved me so that I'll never die.
It tells me to trust and hope in His love
For He has prepared a place for me
In His realm above
Where light and life is forever
And I need not fear death or pain
Because of His love which fails never.
I look to the east, for dawn has come
Painting the canvas of the sky
With the light of the rising sun.
I can feel His smile in the warmth of its rays
As he says, "Beloved Child,
Believe in me always.
Trust me, do not fear—
And I will guide you through the dark
And I will hold you near.”
“You are not alone.”
Well, what do you think? How could I have written this poem better? What do you think of my new dividers and signature? 😉
